ABOUT THE NATIONAL BIPLANE ASSOCIATION
The National Biplane Association is a non-profit, tax exempt organization organized under IRS Code 501(c)(3). It was incorporated in the State of Oklahoma in March, 1987. Its purpose is to educate the general public on the history and development of biplane aircraft and to promote their preservation.
The Association conducts various programs in support of its purpose. The National Convention and Exposition, Biplane Expo, is the largest gathering of a variety of biplanes in the world. It is held annually, on the first weekend of June at Frank Phillips Field in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, 50 miles north of Tulsa. Over 400 aircraft attend, of which 130 to 150 are biplanes. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Awards are given for open-cockpit, cabin, and experimental biplanes, as selected by the vote of registered attendees. Special awards are given to the longest distance flown in an open cockpit biplane, the "Chairman's Award" and the Robert P. Moore Memorial Award for outstanding construction or restoration by an owner-pilot. The event also features an outstanding line up of forums and presenters, as well as honored guests.
The organization owns its own facility, the National Biplane Center, at Frank Phillips Field. It consists of the Biplane Museum, the John A. Bouteller Memorial Library , the Administrtive Offices of the Convention and Exposition volunteer staff, and the newly dedicated Memorial Plaza complex. The main headquarters offices are located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Association is governed by a Board of Directors and the day-to-day affairs are conducted by the Chairman and the Administrative Manager, who serve on a voluntary basis, with part-time clerical staff employed as necessary.
